Indian matrimony in New Zealand
Nearly 300,000 New Zealanders are Indian, and almost none of them are on the matrimonial sites built for India. This page is about looking for a rishta from here: who is here, what is different about it, and what we built because of it.

Who is actually here
The 2023 Census counted 292,092 people of Indian ethnicity in New Zealand, 5.8% of the country and, for the first time, the largest Asian ethnic group. About half, 142,920, were born in India; the rest were born here, in Fiji, or somewhere else along the way. A further 23,808 people wrote Fijian Indian as their ethnicity, and researchers at the University of Otago argue the true number is far higher, because many Fiji Indian families simply tick Indian.
Where they live decides a lot about how a search for a partner goes:
| Region | Indian New Zealanders (2023) |
|---|---|
| Auckland | 154,824 |
| Wellington | 22,227 |
| Waikato | 17,295 |
| Canterbury | 14,763 |
| Bay of Plenty | 10,335 |
More than half the community is in one city, which is why so many profiles say Auckland and why an Auckland family can afford to search within an hour’s drive. Everyone else searches the whole country from the start, and usually Australia as well.
By religion the community is mixed in a way the India-built sites never quite handle: at the last census that asked the question of Indian New Zealanders in detail, roughly 47% were Hindu, 21% Sikh, 15% Christian and 9% Muslim. Language is just as varied, with Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Fiji Hindi all spoken at home.
Why the big sites feel empty from here
Every large matrimonial platform was designed for India and bolted a country filter on afterwards. Sign up from Auckland and you are a row in a database built for someone in Mumbai. The matches it is proudest of are in Delhi, and the questions that decide a rishta here, whether someone is a citizen or on a visa, whether they would move across the Tasman, whether the family came by way of Fiji, are afterthoughts or missing.
The numbers bear that out. On 19 September 2026 our founder, logged in as a paying member of the world’s largest matrimonial site, ran one ordinary search for a Sikh woman aged 18 to 26 and read the counts it printed beside each country: more than 2,000 in India, 51 in all of Australia, and 8 in all of New Zealand. Eight. For the whole country. That is not a reflection of who is here; it is a reflection of who has decided those sites are not for them.
What is different about a rishta in New Zealand
Everyone knows everyone. The community is small enough that a profile with a face on a public gallery will be seen by a cousin, a colleague or an aunty within the week. That is the first reason women stay off the big sites. On Rishta there is no gallery: photos are private until she approves a particular person, and she decides who can find her at all.
Residency is a real question. A large share of the people looking are on work visas, partnership visas or fresh residence, and both families want it answered early. It is a field on every profile here and a filter in every search.
The Tasman is not a border for most families. New Zealand citizens can live and work in Australia on arrival, and since 2023 have a direct path to Australian citizenship after four years there. Half the families on this site have a branch in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. Search here covers both countries if you want it to, and profiles say whether someone is open to moving.
The family is in India, or Fiji, or Punjab, or Kerala. Involving them from the start is normal and the site is built for it: a parent can manage a profile, a Family View page can be shared with relatives who are not members, and the formalities that follow, from the culturally arranged marriage visa to registering the marriage here, are in our guides.
What Rishta does about it
- Every profile is ID-checked before anyone can see it, with a document and a live selfie, and someone from our team reads every new profile on the day it goes live.
- Photos are hers to show. Hidden by default, shown to one approved person at a time, and visible both ways once an interest is accepted.
- Contact details are never on a profile, at any membership level. Messages and calls happen inside Rishta, after both people agree.
- The filters are the ones families here actually use: religion, community (with no preference always available), mother tongue, diet, family origin (India, New Zealand, Australia or elsewhere, with the native place in your own words), residency status, and whether someone is open to living in the other country. Any of them can be a must-have.
- Free until 31 December 2026 for everyone who joins now, then one price for women and men. No contact-detail quotas, no upgrade to read a reply.
- A real matchmaker when you want one, for women and men alike, as a separate paid service.
