Fiji Indian matrimony in New Zealand
Every other matrimonial site folds Fiji Indian families into Indian, which is useless when Fiji Hindi is the language at home, the family has not lived in India for four generations, and the cousins are in Sydney, Suva and Māngere. Rishta treats Fiji Indian as its own community, because it is one.

A community of its own
Fiji Indian families trace themselves to the girmitiyas, the indentured labourers brought from India to Fiji between 1879 and 1916, and to the Gujarati and Punjabi traders who followed. By the time the coups of 1987 and 2000 pushed tens of thousands of families to leave Fiji, they had been Fijian for a century, spoke Fiji Hindi rather than any language of India, and had their own temples, mosques, churches and ways of doing things, including arranging a marriage.
New Zealand took in a large share of them, and it shows: the 2023 Census counted 23,808 people who wrote Fijian Indian as their ethnicity, and researchers at the University of Otago argue the real number is far higher, perhaps three times as many, because most Fiji Indian families simply tick Indian. Either way it is one of the largest Fiji Indian communities anywhere outside Fiji, and most of it is in South Auckland, around Māngere, Ōtāhuhu, Papatoetoe and Manurewa, with settled communities in Hamilton, Wellington and the Hutt, and Christchurch.
What the other sites get wrong
Sign up to an India-built matrimonial site from Māngere and you are asked for your Indian state, your mother tongue from a list that does not include Fiji Hindi, and your caste. Your matches are in Uttar Pradesh. Your grandparents left Uttar Pradesh in 1910. Nobody on the site has heard of Arya Samaj as a thing a family might be, or of a Ramayan mandali, or of the difference between a family from Labasa and a family from Nadi.
Rishta was built with Fiji Indian families as one of its communities from the start:
- Family origin is a field of its own, separate from religion and mother tongue: choose Other, write Fiji, and it shows on the profile, so a family from Labasa is never filed under Uttar Pradesh.
- Fiji Hindi is a mother tongue in its own right, alongside Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil and Telugu for the families who kept those.
- Sanatan and Arya Samaj are listed separately.
- Religion is separate from origin, so Fiji Indian Hindu, Muslim and Christian families are each described exactly.
- Residency status is on every profile: citizen, permanent resident or a visa.
- Open to living in the other country is a field and a filter, because for this community the family is in two countries and often three.
Any of those can be a must-have.
The family on both sides of the Tasman
Fiji Indian New Zealand and Fiji Indian Australia are one community with a sea in the middle. Western Sydney, around Liverpool, Blacktown and Rooty Hill, has the largest Fiji Indian community in Australia, with temples and sangams that have been running for decades, and almost every family in South Auckland has someone there. New Zealand citizens can live and work in Australia on arrival. A search on Rishta covers both countries if you want it to, and most Fiji Indian families set it that way.
Privacy in a small community
The Fiji Indian community in Auckland is close. A photo on a public gallery is seen by an aunty within the week, and that is why so few Fiji Indian women are on the India-built sites. On Rishta there is no gallery. Photos are private until she approves one particular person and are shown both ways once an interest is accepted. She decides whether every approved man can find her, only the men who match her preferences, or nobody except her matchmaker. Contact details are never on a profile. Every interest carries a personal message. And every profile has passed an ID check and been read by a person before anyone can see it.
Families can run the search if they want to: a parent can make and manage a profile, relatives who are not members can be shown a Family View page, and a matchmaker can speak with the family with the member’s consent.
The wedding, and the paperwork
When the families agree, registering a marriage in New Zealand explains the licence, the three days’ notice and how a mandir, mosque or church ceremony becomes the legal marriage. If the match is in Fiji or Australia and will come here, the culturally arranged marriage visa is the route Immigration New Zealand designed for a marriage arranged by family within a cultural tradition.
Fiji Indian Hindu families may also want the Hindu page for New Zealand, Muslim families the Muslim page, Christian families the Christian page, and everyone the Australian page. Joining is free until 31 December 2026 for everyone who joins now.
