Christian matrimony in New Zealand

About one in seven Indian New Zealanders is Christian, and most of the families searching for a Christian rishta here came from Kerala, with Goan, Tamil, Punjabi and Fiji Indian Christian families alongside. If you have been searching for Kerala matrimony, Malayali matrimony or a Chavara-style site in New Zealand, this page is for you.

Open in New Zealand today. Every profile is ID-checked before anyone can see it. Page updated .

Who the Indian Christian community in New Zealand is

At the last census that asked the question in detail, 15.1% of Indian New Zealanders were Christian, something over forty thousand people today. The largest part of it is Malayali: Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Catholics, Orthodox, Mar Thoma, CSI and Pentecostal families from Kerala who came as nurses, engineers and IT workers over the last twenty years and settled in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch. Alongside them are Goan Catholic families, Tamil Christians from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, Punjabi Christians, Anglo-Indian families, and Fiji Indian Christian families whose churches in South Auckland are decades old.

The Syro-Malabar community in Auckland has been served by the Redemptorists for over a decade, with Sunday and Friday Masses at the Parish of the Immaculate Conception in Ellerslie when we last checked. Mar Thoma and Orthodox congregations meet in Auckland and Wellington, and Kerala Pentecostal churches have grown with the nursing workforce in every main centre.

Why the Kerala sites do not work from here

A Malayali family in Hamilton who searches for Kerala matrimony finds sites built for Kerala. Their New Zealand page lists a handful of profiles, most of them in Kochi, and their questions are the questions of Kottayam: which church, which parish, which family. Useful questions, badly asked from twelve thousand kilometres away, with the one question a New Zealand family needs, whether the person can actually stay here, missing.

On Rishta the fields are the ones that decide a Christian rishta from New Zealand:

  • Religion, with Christian as an option, and denomination in your own words in the About section, where every family writes it anyway.
  • Mother tongue: Malayalam, Konkani, Tamil, Punjabi, Hindi, English and the rest.
  • Community, which some families use for the church and some do not, with no preference always available.
  • Family origin: India, New Zealand, Australia or elsewhere, with the native place yours to write.
  • Residency status: citizen, permanent resident or a visa, on every profile.
  • Open to living in the other country, which for a community with so many relatives in Melbourne and Sydney is often the question.

Any of them can be a must-have, so the people you see already fit.

Privacy, and the parish

The Indian Christian community in New Zealand is small enough that a photo on a public gallery is recognised at Mass on the following Sunday. That is why daughters do not join the Kerala sites, and why their mothers end up asking the parish instead.

On Rishta there is no gallery. Photos are private until she approves one particular person, and shown both ways once an interest is accepted. She decides whether every approved man can find her, only the men who match her preferences, or nobody except her matchmaker. Contact details are never on the page. Every interest carries a personal message, so none can be sent in bulk. And every profile has passed an ID check and been read by a person before anyone can see it.

Families are part of it from the start if they want to be: a parent can make and manage a profile, relatives who are not members can be shown a Family View page, and a matchmaker can speak to the family with the member’s consent.

The wedding

A church wedding in New Zealand is a legal marriage when a licence has been issued beforehand and the minister is a registered celebrant, which parish priests and pastors here almost always are. Registering a marriage in New Zealand covers the licence, the three days’ notice, the fee and the certificate. If the match is in Kerala or anywhere else overseas, the culturally arranged marriage visa is Immigration New Zealand’s route for a marriage arranged by family within a cultural tradition, which a Kerala Christian match arranged through the parish and the families is.

Tamil Christian families may also want the Tamil page for New Zealand, Fiji Indian Christians the Fiji Indian page, and everyone the Australian page, where most Malayali searches from here end up looking as well. Joining is free until 31 December 2026 for everyone who joins now.

Questions before you join

Can we search for Catholic, Orthodox, Mar Thoma or Pentecostal?
Religion is a field, with Christian as an option, and the denomination is yours to write in the About section, where most families do. Many also use the community field for it and make it a must-have. We do not pretend to adjudicate between churches.
Can we search for Malayalam, Konkani or Tamil speakers?
Yes. Mother tongue is a field and a filter on every profile, separate from religion, and any of them can be a must-have.
Will a church wedding here be legal?
Yes, with a marriage licence issued beforehand and a minister who is a registered celebrant, which almost every parish priest and pastor in New Zealand is. Our guide to registering a marriage goes through the licence, the notice period and the certificate.
One family is Christian and one is Hindu. Can the site cope?
Religion and community and mother tongue are three separate fields, so each person is described exactly, and no preference is always available. What the families decide is theirs to decide.
Is Australia included?
If you want it to be. Melbourne and Sydney have Malayali Christian communities many times the size of any in New Zealand, with their own Syro-Malabar parishes, and most Kerala families here search both countries.
What does it cost?
Nothing until 31 December 2026 for anyone who joins now, then one price for women and men. A matchmaker is a separate paid service.
